Social Art
One time on a podcast, I heard Jon Batiste talk about being a "social musician". He emphasized that music has a unique power to bring people together across differences. He describes “social music” as using music to build community and shared humanity, even among people with different beliefs. He believes that where politics and society fail to unite us, music and art can succeed—helping people reconnect with their true selves and with one another. He sees creative collaboration as a model for harmony, showing how people from diverse backgrounds can create something beautiful together. Ultimately, he views music not just as entertainment, but as a force for healing, unity, and hope in difficult times.
Toward the later end of COVID, I started carving stamps with the intention of making little pieces of art packaged in a cute envelope along with stickers to give away in order to connect with people. Here is just a few of the thousands of connections I've shared since then.
